NYUMBA YA MUNGU SECONDARY SCHOOL - TANZANIA

TRIP DATES: AUGUST, 2012

If you'd like to travel to Tanzania with us for two weeks to install this solar system, please email info@powertothepeople.org and check out our Voluntourism page. Space is limited.

Power to the People is working together with The Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 5160 and Rotary clubs in Northern California to bring solar electricity to Nyumba ya Mungu Secondary School in Northern Tanzania in 2012.

In August 2012, Power to the People volunteers, local community members and Rotary volunteers will install a 2.5kW solar electric system on the roof of a classroom at Nyumba ya Mungu Secondary School, bringing lights and AC electricity to the school.  The solar installation will benefit hundreds of students to come and will pave the way for enhanced teaching methods, a safer and more comfortable learning environment for students and the establishment of a school computer lab.

Nyumba ya Mungu Secondary School is built and owned by the community of Ngorika Ward in the Manyara Region of Tanzania.  Located on a dry, hilly area, within hefty walking distances from the closest villages of Spillway, Lemkuna and Ngorika, Nyumba ya Mungu Secondary School is the only school in the area for more than 285 students (114 girls and 171 boys), including 113 who live at the school dorms during the school year.

The school campus has eight buildings in total, including classrooms, an administrative building, dorms and teacher housing which are all without electricity. Ten teachers and four non-teaching staff work at the school and a school board in conjunction with community leaders work with the school headmaster to manage financial, policy and other matters at the campus. Nyumba ya Mungu Secondary School is approximately 95 km away from the closet large town with modern conveniences, Moshi.

The community of Ngorika Ward built the school in 2010.  The central government in Tanzania pays salaries of all teachers and a portion of the school’s recurrent outlays and the rest is covered by the community, mostly from school fees.
The installation of solar electricity at the school will bring lights to the campus in the evening, give students who walk for miles to the nearest town a place to charge a cell phone, and will open the door to the possibility of a computer lab on campus.  Having access to modern technology, like computers and Internet access, increases the availability of information and teaches valuable job skills that can benefit students for the rest of their lives.  Having power in such a remote area will significantly improve the quality of life for the students, staff and family members in the surrounding areas.

Travel with Power to the People to Tanzania and be a part of this once in a lifetime expereience to spend time in a local community in Tanzania while installing an off-grid solar electric system on a school. Fo two weeks, North American volunteers will travel around Tanzania seeing some of the most breathtaking sights imaginable and will also help the Nyumba ya Mungu Secondary school obtain lights and power.

Make a difference while on vacation this year. Email info@powertothepeople.org to sign up for this trip.
